Season and pace

Burlington: June to September for lake days; late September to October for foliage. Portland: June to October, with September especially comfortable. Compare the season that fits the activities and trip length you have in mind.

Read the two destination guides, then choose the place whose ordinary evening sounds better—not just the one with the longer attraction list.

Official checks before you commit

Burlington: Downtown and the Waterfront are genuinely easy on foot, but the South End, UVM, and North End are not one continuous sightseeing loop. Save ECHO, Burlington City Arts, and the Fleming Museum for rain, wind, or winter. They are better than forcing a wet lake walk.

Portland: Do not make every meal lobster. Portland gets more interesting when one seafood meal leads and the rest of the itinerary branches out. Treat Portland Head Light as a half-day excursion, not a quick photo after lunch.
