Official checks before you commit

Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island): A rental car is essential for a first visit. Both Kona and Hilo can serve different parts of the island, but neither makes the island small. Volcanic activity, air quality, road conditions, park access, and ocean conditions need a current check.

Maui: Do not plan both Haleakala and Hana back-to-back if your visit is short; the early starts stack up faster than people expect. Beach weather and driving weather are not the same on Maui, so leave at least one flex block for the clearer side of the island.
