Official checks before you commit

Santa Barbara: Do not treat downtown, the waterfront, Montecito, and the foothills as one walkable loop. Pick a zone for the day. The coastline is the easy part. Parking, an exposed midday walk, and last-minute dinner plans cause more friction than the map suggests.

Monterey: Book the aquarium and any whale cruise before locking the rest of a short weekend. Reach Point Lobos early and check current access before you go.
