St. Petersburg: Stay downtown if you want a car-light city break. Gulf beaches are a separate base and a separate daily commute. The Dalí, MFA, Chihuly Collection, James Museum, and Holocaust Museum are useful heat and rain anchors, not backup filler.

Tampa: Stay downtown or Water Street for the simplest first visit. Start outdoor plans early in warm months and hold an indoor museum or long lunch for storms.
